Conventional
dentistry used silver-mercury (amalgam) fillings and gold
restorations for restoring function because of their durability.
The disadvantages of silver-mercury fillings are poor cosmetics,
weakened teeth, and the presence of the known toxin, mercury,
in this material. More conclusive evidence regarding amalgam/mercury
toxicity will be needed before it is banned in this country.
Our dental practice has chosen to eliminate amalgam fillings
in our choice of restorative materials, offering only tooth-colored
restorations in porcelain or acrylic composite materials. |
