Cosmetic Dentistry

Dentistry has changed in the past twenty years largely due to advances in materials that have allowed fillings to be bonded to tooth surfaces. This allows for natural, tooth-colored restorations for both front and back teeth.

Conventional dentistry used silver-mercury (amalgam) fillings and gold restorations for restoring function because of their durability. The disadvantages of silver-mercury fillings are poor cosmetics, weakened teeth, and the presence of the known toxin, mercury, in this material. More conclusive evidence regarding amalgam/mercury toxicity will be needed before it is banned in this country. Our dental practice has chosen to eliminate amalgam fillings in our choice of restorative materials, offering only tooth-colored restorations in porcelain or acrylic composite materials.
