Cosmetic Dentistry - Periodontics

Encinitas, Carlsbad, and San Diego

Gum treatment (periodontics) is an essential part of keeping your mouth healthy. The gums and supportive structure around the teeth, like the jawbone, are the foundation anchoring the teeth in place. It is important to treat any infection or gum disease, in order to prevent potential tooth loss.

When bacteria accumulate along the gum line, it can cause inflammation, redness and bleeding. These are the three main signs of gingivitis. Gingivitis is an infection localized to the gums that can be treated by periodontal therapy. When these areas are not treated, then the infection can spread from the gums to the jawbone. This affects the supportive bone structure around the tooth and unfortunately, once the bone diminishes, it is irreversible.

Periodontal therapies are a series of visits to treat the gum infection by removing the bacterial plaque and tartar that are causing it. Our hygienists will also work with you to create a custom home care regime to help maintain your periodontal health.

Diligent home care alone is not enough to maintain your periodontal health. Based on your gum measurements and home care assessments, our hygienist will recommend the optimal interval of time to help balance and maintain your oral health. Regular visits are important for us to clean the areas below the gum line that you cannot reach with a toothbrush or floss.

Bad Breath treatment

Bacteria trapped beneath the gum line are often the source of bad breath. These bacteria are anaerobic, meaning that they thrive in an oxygen-free environment. Many mouthwashes are alcohol based and may cause your mouth to be dry, thus creating an even more hospitable environment for odor causing bacteria.

Dr. Walsh-Cole and her hygienist can treat bad breath with periodontal treatments, by removing the bacteria that cannot be reached by brushing and flossing alone. We can also work with you to customize a home care regime to aid in fighting bad breath.
