A tooth crown is necessary when your tooth is broken down by a large filling or decay. Its purpose is to cover your entire tooth. Today porcelain crowns can look and feel just like your natural teeth.
Crowns are used for various reasons including:
- Replace areas of decay too large for a filling, inlay, or onlay
- Strengthen a weak or cracked tooth
- Replace failed or broken fillings
- Repair a broken tooth
- Cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
- Strengthen a tooth after a root canal
Gold crowns, although excellent restorations, are not used as frequently today because they are visible when you smile. Porcelain crowns match the color of your natural teeth and have the same reflective quality. There are various types of porcelain crowns and often your bite will determine which choice is best for you.
Eventually all crowns will need to be replaced either from recurrent decay or breakage. When older crowns become loose, food particles and saliva may get into your tooth and cause new decay. A crown that comes off unexpectedly can create a dental emergency.

Dr. Walsh-Cole strives to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible. At your initial examination she will recommend what treatment is best for your dental health. In some instances, a tooth cannot be saved with a dental crown and she may recommend a dental implant.
