What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a permanent replacement for a missing tooth. Dr. Walsh-Cole can replace one or several teeth with dental implants. The implant itself is a titanium rod that is surgically implanted into your jawbone to replace the root of your tooth. This rod fuses with your jawbone. A beautiful, artificial tooth made of porcelain is attached to the implant abutment.
Why should I choose a dental implant over other tooth replacement options?
Dental implants are permanent. They look and feel just like natural teeth, they do not cause wear and tear on the surrounding teeth, and they prevent premature bone resorption normally associated with tooth loss. They are more comfortable and convenient than other forms of tooth replacement, and the most natural-looking.
Although the initial cost is higher, in the long term they are the most cost effective tooth replacement option.
Is it really necessary to replace my missing tooth if it is not visible?
Yes. A missing tooth can cause serious dental problems beyond cosmetics. It can:
- Allow your teeth to shift
- Trap food particles and cause decay
- Cause gum disease
- Cause bone loss
You may also experience difficulty and even pain when chewing. A missing tooth can even cause you to adjust the way you chew, and over time lead to painful TMD.
Will I have to change my diet to prevent damage to my new tooth?
No. Your artificial tooth will be strong, durable, and resistant to staining. You will be able to enjoy the same foods and beverages you enjoy today.
Do dental implants require special care?
No. This is one of the nice things about implant dentistry; you care for them just like the rest of your teeth.
Will my dental implant affect how I speak or chew?
No. A dental implant will feel just like your natural teeth. It is stable and secure, so it does not slip or cause pain. You will talk and chew as if you never lost a tooth.
How often will my dental implant need to be replaced?
Your implant will be permanent. Both the rod and the artificial tooth can last a lifetime. If some unforeseen event, such as an accident, damages the artificial tooth, it can be replaced. The implant itself will not need replacement.
