Sedation dentistry is an increasingly popular option for patients who fear going to the dentist, but the benefits of sedation extend beyond calming anxiety.
Encinitas cosmetic dentist Dr. Mary Walsh-Cole offers patients the option of conscious sedation in our soothing office setting. Conscious sedation provides you with a heightened state of relaxation and comfort through your dental visit without the use of intravenous (IV) sedatives.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
During your consultation to determine if you’re a candidate for conscious sedation, Dr. Walsh-Cole will thoroughly review your medical history and discuss any medication you’re taking that may interfere with sedation.
Sedation dentistry is generally safe for adult patients in good overall health who experience:
- Fear of dental work
- A strong gag reflex
- Sensitive teeth
- A need for multiple procedures
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) or other conditions that make it difficult to hold your mouth open for extended periods
If conscious sedation dentistry is right for you, Dr. Walsh-Cole will recommend one of two types of sedation based on your physical condition and the procedures to be performed.
Types of Conscious Dental Sedation
We offer two options for conscious dental sedation:
- Oral sedation, a prescription sedative that you take prior to your visit
- Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, which is administered just before your procedure
Both provide a deep level of relaxation and numbness, although you will remain awake, able to breathe freely and communicate during your procedure. Both sedation options also have an amnesiac attribute, and most patients remember little or none of their dental work.
Advantages of Sedation Dentistry
In addition to its calming properties, sedation dentistry allows you to have multiple dental procedures in a single visit. Sedation dentistry can be used for most dental procedures, from routine teeth cleanings to cosmetic dentistry work including:
- Dental bonding
- Dental fillings
- Dental implants
- Gum recontouring
- Inlays/onlays
- Lumineers
- Porcelain veneers
- Teeth whitening
You will need someone to drive you to and from your sedation dentistry appointment. Dr. Walsh-Cole will discuss additional guidelines with you during your consultation.
