Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss and can affect your overall health. Fortunately, periodontal disease is treatable and reversible, but you have to be able to identify the signs. If you have:
- Persistent bad breath
- Red or swollen gums
- Bleeding or tender gums
- Painful chewing
- Food particles that get stuck between teeth and gums
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Teeth that change configuration
- Longer-looking teeth
Then you should contact a dentist immediately to get an evaluation for periodontal disease. In the San Diego area, you can call 760-753-1227 or email us to schedule a visit with Dr. Mary A. Walsh-Cole.
Signs of Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease (sometimes called gum disease). Your gums will become red and swollen and will bleed easily. You may also notice chronic bad breath. This stage of gum disease is usually totally reversible with increased brushing, regular flossing, and treatment by a dental professional.
Signs of Periodontitis
If your gingivitis is not treated, you risk permanent damage that can be caused by periodontitis. In this stage of periodontal disease, bacteria have infected pockets between the gums and the teeth. The bacteria attack your tooth roots, the gums, and even your jaw bone. Your teeth may be loose, may shift, and may be sensitive during chewing. You may see pus between your teeth. Chronic bad breath is much worse at this stage. Treatment can still halt the progress of the disease at this point, but there may be damage that can only be reversed with invasive surgery.
Evaluating Your Periodontal Disease
During your visit, Dr. Mary A. Walsh-Cole and her hygienists will work to evaluate the extent of your periodontal disease. They will examine your gums for inflammation, measure the depth of periodontal pockets, and use x-rays to check your teeth and jaw for signs of damage. Once the extent of your periodontal disease is evaluated, a treatment plan will be recommended.
