Neuromuscular Dentist - Snoring Treatment
Encinitas, Carlsbad, and San Diego
Snoring is a very common problem, but it can be treated by a highly trained dentist. Snoring can cause sleep deprivation for you and your family. The problem is often more noticeable to a spouse than the snorer, but the snorer can suffer very serious health consequences. Dr. Walsh-Cole can help you stop snoring and get the rest you need.
You may have seen over-the-counter dental devices or mouth guards advertised as snoring remedies. While some of these devices may help, they can also cause problems with your teeth and jaw. Some are so uncomfortable that the device itself keeps you awake at night. As a LVI trained neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Walsh-Cole can custom create a mouthpiece that will fit comfortably and keep your jaw in the true proper alignment.
What causes snoring?
When you are asleep the muscles in your mouth and throat relax. This allows your airway to become smaller and vibrate as air passes through it. Snoring causes sleep deprivation by constantly waking you up throughout the night, even if you do not notice waking. Snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea.
In sleep apnea the airway closes completely and your breathing stops briefly, causing oxygen deprivation. You wake up enough to adjust, start breathing again, and fall back asleep. This often repeats continuously through the night and can occur more than 100 times an hour.
Dangers of sleep deprivation
Snoring and sleep apnea can both lead to sleep deprivation for you and your family. Sleep deprivation can lead to serious problems including:
- Low energy
- Daytime sleepiness
- Low productivity
- Memory problems
- Irrational thinking
- Foggy thinking
- Difficulty concentrating
- Slow reaction time
- Depressed immune system
Snoring can be stopped
Keeping your jaw in the forward position so that the airway does not narrow is the key to stopping snoring. The oral appliance that Dr. Walsh-Cole will create for you will do this, stopping your snoring safely and comfortably.
